A downspout emptying at the base of a wall has moved the water four feet and solved nothing. It now soaks into the ground against your foundation. Most houses around here have five-inch gutters, and three of every four we look at are fine with them. The ones that overflow are usually not undersized at all. They are wrongly pitched, or they have too few downspouts, or the downspouts are in the wrong place. Six-inch gutter with a three-by-four downspout is the right answer on a big roof slope or a steep one, where water arrives fast and all at once.

A gutter needs a fall of about a quarter of an inch every ten feet toward its outlet. Too little and it stands water, which breeds mosquitoes in July and freezes in January. Too much and it reads as crooked from the street. It is set against a string line by someone who has done it many times, and it is the single most common thing done badly on a cheap installation.
We also check the board before anything gets hung on it. If that board is soft, the brackets have nothing to hold. It becomes a soffit and fascia repair first. That is why we look behind the old gutter before quoting, not after.

When to have it done
The best time is while the roof is being done, if it is due anyway. The drip edge, the gutter apron and the gutter line all get detailed as one job and you pay for one set-up instead of two. Worth raising if you are already weighing a new roof.
Failing that, spring or early fall. Not December, when brackets go into frozen wood and sealant will not set properly. And not the two weeks after the leaves come down, when every gutter company in the Miami Valley is booked solid. If mature trees are the reason you are here, ask about guards while the ladder is already up.
